Code of conduct and
Terms and Conditions

The following code applies to everyone attending one of our social dances or events, including committee members, volunteers and visiting teachers:

1. We will treat everyone equally and with respect. We will not offer unsolicited advice or instruction.

2. We will be inclusive in inviting others to dance, and understanding if someone says no.

3. We will be responsible for both our own physical safety and that of others by being aware of our surroundings on the dance floor. We will not perform aerials on the social dance floor, and if we consume alcohol we will do so responsibly.

4. We will take care of our own personal hygiene, and be considerate of others when choosing our clothing, footwear and accessories.

5. We will be respectful and acknowledge that the personal boundaries of others may not be the same as our own, and we will not touch anyone without consent.

As the committee we promise to treat with sensitivity and discretion any reports made about behaviour which goes against this code. We encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed inappropriate or intimidating behaviour to tell a member of the committee.

We now have an email address for you to share any concerns or questions relating to welfare. We hope it won’t be the case, but if anything happens at York Lindy which makes you feel uncomfortable, you can let us know at welfare@yorklindy.co.uk. It’s also a place for you to share suggestions as to how the community can be safer or more inclusive.

This address will be monitored by the welfare panel which includes the chair of York Lindy, one teacher and one non-committee member. They will act discretely when dealing with any messages, but may be required to follow up any issues with you or other people involved.

If you prefer to speak to someone in person, all members of the committee are willing to help you with anything concerning your welfare.

All activities

• Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell, have any Covid-19 symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19.

Mask matching for social dancing

• When social dancing, if a person is already wearing a mask, please match them by wearing a mask to dance with them. Let's be mindful that we are all in different situations and help everyone to take part in a way that they feel most comfortable.

Classes

• Masks are not required, however you are welcome to wear one if you would like.

• We rotate partners throughout our classes. If you prefer not to rotate partners, we fully support your decision but ask that you please sign-up with a partner you feel comfortable dancing with.

Classes

• Unfortunately, under 16s are not permitted to take part in our classes due to our welfare policy.

• 16 and 17 year olds are welcome to take part in our classes providing they are accompanied and supervised by a responsible guardian for the duration of the class.

• Usually, we encourage partipants to rotate partners in our classes. However, 16 and 17 year olds may only take part in partnered rotation providing they and their responsible guardian have given consent and feel comfortable with this.

• 18 year olds and above are welcome to take part in our classes independently.

Socials

• We want to make York Lindy as accessible to as many people as possible so we welcome families to attend our socials and bring their children where they wish, providing they are sensibly behaved and supervised at all times.

  • Our day time tea dances as specifically advertised as being open to families as these are most likely to be a suitable environment for children and young people.

  • If you are a parent or guardian who would like to bring children to a suitable social, let us know as some community members may be organising a family-friendly table.

• When it comes to rotating partners while social dancing, the same policy applies as with classes.
