About Us
York Lindy is a not-for-profit organisation passionate about sharing the fun and energy of jazz dances from the 1920s, '30s and '40s.
All our teachers are local experienced dancers, who are eager to share their love for swing dance. All profits raised are reinvested back into the York Lindy community to provide venues, workshops, live music and host teachers from further afield.
What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is an African-American partnered dance that originated in Harlem, New York, in the 1920s and '30s. It is one branch of many swing dances that evolved in conjunction with jazz music. The dance itself is solid yet flowing, energetic yet relaxed; while closely linking to the character of the music.
Lindy hop is considered a cultural phenomenon that broke down race barriers, when segregation was still the norm. This was particularly evident at The Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, which was one of few places black and white people could dance together. Dancers would share their moves, styles and be inspired by one another, thus allowing Lindy Hop to flourish.
Since the mid 1980's there has been a huge Lindy Hop revival. Lindy Hop lessons, workshops, weekends and competitions can now be found in most cities around the world.
